Our Story

Heigelhomestead

We bought our home in 2012 and immediately got to work renovating our house and building our landscape.

Two years later I began a small vegetable garden. Two years after that I took on my first flock of chickens. In 2021, as the pandemic brought more time at home, we added goats and a high tunnel.

What started as a passion for gardening and a desire to be self reliant, has grown into a full scale homestead and the creation of our 3 acre farm.

We have learned a lot of things in the process and we are hoping this blog is a place where we can share what we have done, the projects we have completed – and some that never seem to be done.

Welcome to our homesteading journey!

Three Monkies Farm

Meet the Monkies.

I started my first garden with my boys. They each took turns with the shovel and we dug. Moved rocks and dug some more. Our first vegetable garden was small, but sweet.

Each year we have expanded and added. Every year I promise myself that this is the last iteration of the garden – this is the permanent design.

Every year I realize just how wrong I always am. The garden grows and so does my vision.

I started out wanting to grow a little food for my family and share the joy of our hands in the dirt.

Today, my vision still holds. I enjoy the pleasure of feeding my family, the connection to the land, and our food.

I have added to my goals and dreams. I have listened to that voice urging me to build and expand. I have accepted this gift and want to let it flourish. I can’t wait to share the beauty of it all with you!

My name is Erin. I am a science teacher, gardener, DIY try-hard and someone who really struggles at sitting still.
